The file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it in Outlook

Problem

In Outlook 2016, when you select a PDF that is attached to an email to preview the page content, you may receive the following error message.

"The file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it"

Workaround

To recover the preview function, please try following procedure.

1.Firstly,please verify that the Shell Extension component in Foxit PhantomPDF was installed.  Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Foxit Software\Foxit PhantomPDF\Shell Extensions or C:\Program Files\Foxit Software\Foxit PhantomPDF\Shell Extensions, see if there are two dll files and one exe files. If they appear, the component was installed. Otherwise, Foxit PhantomPDF needs to be reinstalled by installing the entire Shell Extensions feature during Installation Wizard.

2.Exit Outlook.

3.Start Registry Editor.  

  • In Windows 7, click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.

  • In Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8, press the Windows key + R to open a Run dialog box, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.

4. Locate following registry key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\shellex\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}

5. Check if the value of (Default) entry and PrevPreviewHandler is same as the following key:

{1B96FAD8-1C10-416E-8027-6EFF94045F6F}

6. If not, right click each entry of above, choose Modify and change the Value data to {1B96FAD8-1C10-416E-8027-6EFF94045F6F}

7. Click Ok to apply the change.
